So when we were in Cinque Terre, Kelly mentioned that she wanted to come back to Firenze for at least a day to do some shopping in the famous San Lorenzo Leather Market!! I had not plans really for what I wanted to do for the second to last weekend! I was thinking Verona/Venice, but the people I knew from my program that were going, well I didn’t want to travel with them. Alli and Angelina were planning on Milan and even though my life long dream was to visit Milan in Italy, seriously since I was 13. I didn’t want to go there flat broke. And, also near Venice was Giovanni who I met in Argentina and I wanted to see him. So Kelly had this GREAT idea that we could do Firenze on Saturday, Venice on Sunday, I love Kelly and Firenze so to have the opportunity to travel with her and see Giovanni, well I was ecstatic.
Friday night we took the train to Firenze and realized that we were on the same train as Chelsea, Bree, and Melissa. Oh yeah, so Alli, Angelina, Kelly and I were going to Firenze for the day and then splitting up the next day, but Melissa was not traveling with us. I gave her grief about splitting up Gelato per Cinque, but it was all in fun.
On the train we needed to kill time and for some reason I was not able to fall sleep, I think it was because of the excitement. I mean we were going to Firenze, which meant that we were going to eat at OSTERIA DE BENCI!!!!!!! OMGSH I just cannot wait, this was the most brilliant plan Kelly ever had. In order to kill time, I listened to music and when that wouldn’t do I started to braid everyone’s hair, by the end of the train ride you had all 7 of us in braids.
After we got to Firenze, GAWD I hate humid hot weather…we could not find our hostel, or the street, and no one thought to bring a map. Eventually after asking and roaming around we found the street and our hostel. Our hostel was cheap, and it was creepy. I mean the girls who went with us in Cinque Terre would have probably run away and never returned. The stairs were small and it was dark and a little gloomy and then we had to share a room with 4 other people, worse part we were not in the same room. =/ Kelly and I stayed in one and Alli and Angelina in another, where there was a creepy man just laying there staring at them, which to me was weird I mean you are in FIRENZE, why would you stay in doors. Obviously, he doesn’t know about Osteria de Benci.
We had reservations to Osteria de Benci and we were running late! Not only that but I could not find my wallet anywhere! This meant one of two things, I left it in Assisi or I lost it/I was robbed! I was freaking out, but I had my Discover card, which is accepted, in most places in Italy and there is no International fee, so all was good. Except I might have lost my VISA, ISIC Card and 20€, it was not that bad. I decided not to call BofA until I was back in Assisi and sure I lost my wallet…. maybe not the brightest idea, but I am glad I waited because my wallet was there!
So we walked to Benci’s, Alli and Angelina spotted Kelly and me and all was well with the world! Benci’s is just amazing and our waiter so cute! Actually all the waiters are super friendly. It was during this visit that we realized that the placemat I had decorated our first time there out of boredom was up on their wall! And well I was already in love with them but upon finding this out I flipped out and became obsessed! I was honored! & I was actually already in the process of making another one.
After Benci’s we went to two different bars, both filled with TOURISTS!!!! It was awful, so we decided we were too tired to deal with the obnoxious tourists and the LAME bars so we went back to our hostel.
The next day (Saturday, 15.June.2012) I woke up at 8:30 because Kelly made me. It was HUMID hot, and I was tired and getting in a funk. However, I went to shower and started to get ready. We called and texted and called Angelina and Alli some more, they are heavy sleepers and will wake for nothing. Finally at around 9ish our attempts prevailed and they were up and joining us in our room. We were trying to decide what to do and went for just having a chilled morning. Last time we were in Firenze we RAN around everywhere. One regret, was not going to The Accademia to see the real David but we had reservations at Benci’s for lunch and by the time we were all ready it was too late to do anything and make it back in time for our reservation.
We headed to the tourist office, picked up a map, walked to the train station where we split up. Kelly and I walked in search of an ATM and Alli and Angelina took a cab with all our stuff to their hostel. I was unable to pull money out of an ATM so I called Discover and let me say that I LOVE THEM! The lady was nice, helpful, and efficient. They helped me right away and we chatted a little about my travels. Finally, Kelly and I were ready so we made a quick stop to purchase some credit for our phones, a fruit cup and some juice.
We spent the morning walking around Firenze, just roaming the streets and talking and laughing and trying not to think about how we were in the final days of our trip. And then BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, Kim Possible ringtone goes off and guess who else just got to Firenze? ROBERTO and his MOM. Oh yeah, not sure if I mentioned this but Roberto’s mom came back to Italy to look after him since he had some problems and had to be hospitalized for about 4 days. So they were here and they decided to join us for lunch at Benci. It was just GREAT! I called Benci’s to let them know we were adding two more people and that we wanted to head there early, they were like NO PROBLEM! COME ON BY we are waiting for you! Seriously, I just love them over there and the food too, mouth-watering!
After Benci’s we decided to head over to Festival del Gelato, and introduce Robert and his mom to the good life! I not only ate a gelato but also then went on to have some watermelon! I was a little nom nom nom monster!
Finally, after our Gelato the reason we originally went there—The San Lorenzo Market! We spent HOURS there!! I bought key chains and friendship bracelets for M and G. I also bought a new wallet and a purse for myself, my current purse is falling apart so I thought it would be cool to buy myself something nice. It is the most beautiful green leather purse, and it has a unique design. The bad part is unlike my Argentina purse this one cannot fit as much. I bought a shirt for Mr. Bott, the usual gift that I get whenever I travel to a different country. Moreover, I bought a new dress for a date with M to get Gelato! ;)
After the Market we just walked around for a while. I was getting in a funk so I sat down by the Duomo and listened to music. Then we moved over and watched a Marathon get started. Afterwards, we headed over to Benci’s again for one final dinner!! There we took a picture with our waiter! We only had one Tiramisu and half a liter of the house wine. Our waiter knew us so well; he knew we could not handle a whole liter because we had one earlier with Robert’s mom. SHE IS SO LEGIT BTW! Then after we told them how it was our last day in Firenze and so we took a picture with our waiter!!!!! He is sooo cute! He gave me his name and I was supposed to look him up on Facebook! Which I did, but I did not send him a friend request yet because I was not sure if that was him. Anyway, it was a great time!
Soon after Kelly and I had to run to Alli and Angelina’s hostel to get our bags and then going over to the train station to catch out train to Ferrara. We were continuing with our plans to see Venice, except we were running late!!! We left Benci’s with 30 minutes to make it to Alli and Angelina’s hostel to get our bags and the train station to catch our train! NOT a good idea since the marathon we saw earlier decided to block our path and NO taxis in sight! Finally after running, panting, and rushing people out of their taxi we were on our way to the hostel with 12 minutes to make it! OMGSH if we didn’t make our train we were in deep doo doo!!!! The traveling lords were with us and Alli and Angelina sprinted to their room got our bags we hugged goodbye quickly and then we were off to the station! We got there with two minutes to spare except guess what? Our train’s binary was not on the screen…because it was LATE!!! Wooohoooooo! We made it!
And so ended the Day in Firenze in which we got everything we wanted! <3
